PLATE JOBSUse cases
Jobs worth handing to an agent.
Each of these names the mode to use and the local model we would pick for it, so you can reproduce the workflow rather than guess at it.
- Architect modeRefactor code you did not writeLarge refactors are where an agent earns its keep, because the work is mechanical but spans too many files to hold in your head. Architect mode is built for exactly this shape of task.
- Agent modeGet coverage onto code that has noneWriting tests for existing code is well-specified, tedious, and easy to verify, which makes it the single best first task for an agent. You will know immediately whether the output is good, because the tests either run or they do not.
- Analyze modeGet oriented in an unfamiliar repositoryThe first day in a new repository is spent building a mental model. Ask and Analyze are read-only, so you can interrogate the project aggressively with no risk of it editing anything.
- Agent modeCode with AI on a plane or an air-gapped machineEvery cloud AI editor stops being an AI editor the moment the connection drops. With a local model pulled, Osmium does not — the model is a file on your disk and inference happens on your GPU.
- Agent modeUse an AI agent without your code leaving the buildingPlenty of teams cannot paste their source into a third-party service, which usually means they get no AI tooling at all. A local model removes the question entirely: there is no request to make.
